She turns away. In this small, intimate canvas, Pfishova gives us a woman caught in the act of withdrawal — her head bowed and angled from us, her long dark hair falling like a curtain drawn half across the scene. The face, where we expect recognition, offers none: it is a warm plane of ochre and umber light, dissolving at its edges into blue-grey shadow, its features sanded almost to absence. We are given a presence and denied a gaze. She is unmistakably there, and just as unmistakably withheld.
Across the cheek and throat run faint incised lines — scratched directly into the paint, like cracks in old plaster or the threads of a veil pressed into skin. They are the painting’s quiet violence: small wounds on the surface of the self, marks of time and handling that refuse to let the tenderness read as merely soft. This is a face that has been worn.
The work sits at the heart of the She series, where Pfishova circles the question of the female self as something perpetually half-seen — glimpsed in passing, dissolving under scrutiny, never fully surrendering its interior. Here the warmth of the palette makes the withholding almost unbearable: we are drawn close, invited to intimacy, and met with a face that has turned to dusk.
In the context of Pfishova’s wider enquiry — the body, concealment, and the systems that frame how a woman is looked at — this quiet painting makes its own refusal. She will not meet your eye. She keeps her face for herself.
