A figure faces us — shoulders squared, dark hair falling like a mantle — and where a face should meet our gaze there is instead a soft oval of light, a pale gold void burning quietly in the place of features. Pfishova gives us the whole grammar of a portrait: the frontal pose, the framing hair, the steady presence of a body turned toward us. And then she withholds the one thing a portrait exists to deliver. The face is not hidden; it is luminous and absent at once, dissolved into a glow that reads, unmistakably, as a halo slipped from above the head down onto the face itself.

Low on the torso, a second light answers the first — a warm amber bloom at the belly, as though the figure carried an inner source, a lamp behind the ribs. The echo is deliberate: this is a body lit from within, twice over, yet denied the single mark by which we name and claim another person.

The painting draws openly on the language of the icon and the Madonna — the frontal, numinous, haloed presence — only to empty it of identity. Pfishova’s faceless woman is sacred and anonymous in the same breath: everyone and no one, a self rendered holy precisely by being unreadable.

At the centre of the She series, Nimbus states the series’ question at its purest. Who is granted a face? What remains of a woman when the features — the site of recognition, judgement and control — are refused? Here, what remains is light: a presence that cannot be read, and will not be.
