Out of near-total darkness, something begins to glow. In this small, deeply interior painting, Pfishova lets an ovoid form rise from a field of blacks and bruised greens — a luminous body of olive, ochre and, at its core, a slow ember of rust-red, as though warmth were gathering somewhere beneath the surface of the dark. A great curved shadow sweeps around it, half enclosure and half embrace, holding the light the way a cupped hand holds a flame against wind.

The image hovers deliberately between figure and abstraction. One moment it is a bowed body folded into shadow, a presence turned inward; the next it is purely a glow — a seed, a cocoon, a womb, something not yet born and not quite nameable. Pfishova refuses to settle it, and that refusal is the painting’s subject. This is the hour before a form declares itself: gestation, latency, the quickening of a life or a self that has not yet taken shape.

Worked in her signature low, achromatic-leaning register — here warmed by green and a single red heat — the surface is scratched and breathed over, matter handled until it seems to hold its own dim light. Against the darkness that surrounds it, the glow reads as fragile and absolute at once.

Within Pfishova’s enquiry into the body, concealment and interiority, Quickening turns away from the face entirely and toward something earlier: the self as a warmth in the dark, forming, before it can be seen.
